The lighter you pack the easier you travel. This is the closest thing there is to an absolute rule in travel. Pack the lightest clothing you can, and restrict yourself to only the clothes you are sure you will wear. The less you pack, the less you carry and the less tired you will get.

If you are traveling out of the country be sure to let someone know when you are leaving and when you will be back. You should also back up your documents and make them accessible to yourself through the internet; leaving copies with a trusted friend is also advised. If your documents get lost or stolen, you will want to be able to attain them quickly.

When you are thinking to travel, regardless of whether it is overseas or within your country of residence, you must be sure to keep your passport, tickets, banking information and cash in a secure pouch or location where you are staying like a safe or lock box. This information is very important when you are traveling so keep it safe at all times.

When making travel plans, remember that in the US, the Americans With Disabilities Act gives you protection against discrimination; however, this is not true in other countries. You will want to take extra care in making provisions for your trip. Be certain the airlines and other transport services are aware of and can accommodate your special needs. Get a clear understanding of how and where your assistive devices will be transported. If you have special dietary requirements, be sure to make arrangements for them in advance.

Traveling on long international flights can be strenuous, especially when jet lag sets in. To help yourself avoid this, plan for a flight that arrives in your desired destination in the morning around the time you would generally be waking up. Once on the flight, take a couple Tylenol PM to put you to sleep (especially after the in-flight meal!) and rest easy all the way to your destination. Wake up feeling refreshed and ready to greet the day!

If you know that you are going to have a long layover in a city, check what there is to do beforehand. A 3 hour layover in Washington D.C. can easily turn into a quick tour of the Washington Mall or a long sit in Minneapolis can become a quick shopping trip to the Mall of America!

If you're going to be staying in a hotel, one of the first things you should do is check the alarm clock. Often either the guest prior or a maid playing a prank will have the alarm clock set and it may wake you up blaring in your ear in the middle of the night.

Many of us read the book "Blue Highways" by William Least Heat Moon. It gave a fascinating look at the back roads of America, and is worth remembering when you are planning a trip abroad. Finding those charming out-of-the-way places can give you rich experiences that you will remember for a lifetime. (But be sure to keep safety in mind, also.)

Now that you have an understanding of what it takes to successfully travel without any hassles, you can go ahead and plan that next trip. Just remember the tips and advice that you were given here and you should have no problems taking a relaxing and stress free trip, next time around.
