Doubtful Sound

29

When English explorer Captain James Cook sailed in 1770 into the harbour leading into what is now known as Doubtful Sound, he was dubious about entering the stretch of water for fear he would not get enough wind in his sails to return to the open sea. Thus did Doubtful Sound get its name.

Today, cruising Doubtful Sound is one of New Zealand's major attractions.

Where is it?

Doubtful Sound is on the southwestern edge of New Zealand's South Island, within Fiordland national park.

It lies south of arguably the more popular Milford Sound.

Doubtful Sound is the deepest (421 metres) and the second largest of the 14 fiords in Fiordland national park. It is three times longer and 10 times larger than Milford Sound.

What are its attractions?

The breadth and stillness of the water ? Doubtful Sound has been dubbed the Sound of Silence ? give the feel of a mystic natural serenity that is at once fascinating and supremely awe-inspiring.

The landforms around Doubtful Sound not only provide striking landscapes but are also seemingly endless tracts of wilderness and wildlife habitats.

In the Sound itself are dolphins that frolic and race your ship and, on a kayak tour, you can get really close and personal with fur seals, crested penguins and other wildlife on shore.

How do you get there?

Unlike Milford Sound, Doubtful Sound is not directly accessible by road. Cruising and kayaking arrangements may be made at Queenstown, Te Anau and the town of Manapouri where your Doubtful Sound adventure begins.

There is coach travel between Queenstown, Te Anau and Manapouri.

From Manapouri you take a short cruise on Lake Manapouri, take a coach trip across Wilmot Pass, then board your Doubtful Sound cruise ship at Deep Cove.

Can I do a one-day cruise?

Yes, many do. But since you take up time during the overland trip to Manapouri, then the cruise across the lake, you have just about four-five hours on Doubtful Sound itself.

Others prefer taking an overnight trip, such as is available from Real Journeys. The Fiordland Navigator, for instance, has viewing decks, dining saloon, observation lounge, and a choice of private cabins with ensuite bathrooms or shared bunk-style accommodation. Get in touch with Real Journeys in Queenstown, Te Anau or Manapouri.

Can I go by kayak?

You can organise to go kayaking on Doubtful Sound in Queenstown, Te Anau, Manapouri or with your travel agent.

If cruising on a ship, check if it has kayaking facilities.
