Azarenka, Djokovic Win Singles Titles

Defending champions Victoria Azarenka (Belarus) and Novak Djokovic (Serbia) have retained their Australian Open titles by defeating opponents Li Na (China) and Andy Murray (UK), respectively.

It is Djokovic's third successive Australian Open men's singles title and Azarenka's second successive women's singles title.

The women's singles title took place on January 26, the men's singles final on January 27.

Azarenka's opponent in the final, No 6 seed Li, suffered two bad falls during the match, once during the second set, and the next in the third set, both requiring medical times-out. Li was ahead in the first set, 6-4, then lost the next two sets.

Before the start of this year's Australian Open, Spain's Rafael Nadal, 2009 Australian Open men's singles champion and last year's runner-up, announced in December that he was not competing in this year's Grand Slam tournament in Melbourne due to a reported stomach virus which had hampered his training.

This year, in the fourth round, title-holder Djokovic went perilously close to being knocked out of the competition by Swiss player Stanislas Wawrinka in a five-setter that went for more than five hours.

Five-time Australian Open women's singles champion Serena Williams was eliminated in the quarterfinals by compatriot and relative newcomer Sloane Stephens.

The Australian Open matches are played at Melbourne Park.

Number of competitors

One hundred twenty-eight men's singles players and the same number of women's singles players compete in the Australian Open. The men's and women's doubles have 64 pairs each, while 32 pairs compete in the mixed doubles.

Thirty-two men's singles players and 32 women's singles players are seeded.

Seeded players eliminated

In Rounds 1 and 2 played until January 17, a number of seeded players lost their matches and were eliminated from the competition.

By the end of Round 2, three of the top 10 women seeds had been eliminated.

Italy's Sara Erran lost in the first round while the Czech Republic's Petra Kvitova and Australia's top-ranked player Samantha Stosur lost in Round 2.

Round 3 of singles tennis matches was completed on the night of January 19, with Round 4, the round of 16, beginning in the morning of January 20. Round 4 winners competed in the quarterfinals.
