Killer Bee Identification
- Killer bees are actually hybrids of the European honeybees and African bees. They are about 3/4 of an inch in length.
- Killer bees possess a covering of fine fuzz and are brown or tan. They have black stripes on their bodies but these are not as obvious as those on a yellow jacket wasp for example.
- A killer bee has four wings that a person can see through affixed to its thorax, or middle section. Also attached to this part of a killer bee are three pairs of legs.
- The head is the smallest part of a killer bee and the abdomen, located at the opposite end of its body, is the largest. The eyes of this species are large and enable the bee to have the ability to fly at night.
- Killer bees will respond angrily to certain loud or annoying noises, chase someone for as far as a quarter of a mile and attack in swarms with little if any provocation. The sheer number of stings a person receives during an attack can cause death from shock.
