How to Locate Judgment Creditors
- 1). Request a copy of your credit report. Under federal law, every consumer is entitled to request one free copy of her credit report per year. You may request your copy from the AnnualCreditReport website. (See Resources.)
- 2). Examine the credit report once you receive it. You can choose from among three major credit reporting services- TransUnion, Experian and Equifax. If you obtain your credit report from AnnualCreditReport, you will receive reports from all three companies.
- 3). Find the section in each report entitled "Public Records." This section will include all debts that have been reduced to a judgment through a court process, as well as tax liens and bankruptcies. For each judgment, the court name and case number are listed, as well as the amount of the judgment. Make a list of all courts and case numbers.
- 4). Contact each court that shows a judgment against you. Once a debt has been reduced to a judgment, you generally have to repay it through the clerk of courts where the judgment was rendered. If you want information about the original creditor or the debt itself you are entitled to copies of all court records.
- 5). Arrange to pay the debt off by making payments to the clerk of courts or by making a one-time payment of the total amount owed.
