How to Make a Hip Turn in a Golf Swing
- 1). The first step to making a good hip turn is to practice starting with your feet together and set your hands forward a little to initiate your golf swing.
- 2). Then swing the golf club back using your shoulders and hips to rotate the club back.
- 3). Try to feel like you are pushing your hands back using your hips and shoulders at the same time and point the butt or tip of the golf club grip towards your target.
- 4). Then stop when the golf club is level or parallel to your target. This will ensure you have properly hinged your wrists to set the club on the proper swing plane or path.
- 5). Then continue your hip and shoulder turn while continuing to extend and push your hands straight back opposite the target line. The shoulders continue to wind back about twice as far as your hip turn.
- 6). Once you reach the extent of your wind up you should feel a coil in your hips and shoulders and your back should be nearly facing your target. Starting the swing with your feet together will help you make a good shoulder and hip turn but not slide your hips back or forward.
- 7). Now from the top of your golf swing take a step toward your target with your front foot and allow your front hip to follow and propel the downswing.
- 8). Feel as though you are planting your left foot right before you reach the bottom of your arc generating speed through impact by leading your hip turn with your step.
- 9). Continue your downswing all the way through to your finish by continuing to release your shoulders and hips and then the golf club until your weight is on your front foot and your chest is facing the target. Hold your finish balancing your weight on your front foot and hips turned toward the target to ensure you have made a balanced swing.
