    Kidney Stones

    • Kidney stones (renal lithiasis) is a condition characterized by the buildup of acid salts and minerals in the urine. They occur commonly in people who are incessantly dehydrated or who don't drink enough water. The remedy for them is to pass them through the urinary tract, which can be rather painful. Drinking plenty of water helps to pass kidney stones and also prevents their formation.

    Causes

    • According to the Mayo Clinic, there isn't one definitive cause for kidney stones. There are a number of factors that could contribute to their formation. Generally, they occur when there's an imbalance in the urine of crystal-forming minerals, the most common being calcium. If there's not enough fluid in the body to assist in their breakdown, they build up into small stones that lodge in the kidney.

    Water Safety

    • According to the EPA, drinking water normally has small amounts of contaminants in it. As many as 90 of them are regulated. However, certain contaminants are harmful, like the presence of fecal coliform bacteria or cryptosporidium, a parasite. Having your water tested, acquiring your city's water report and installing the appropriate filtration system based on that information will insure safe drinking water. This water has to travel through your kidneys, whose main function is to filter wastes from your body, so the cleaner it is, the easier it will be able to do the job.

    Reverse Osmosis

    • Reverse osmosis is the movement of pressurized water across a semi-permeable membrane in a saline solution as it is forced to move from a stronger to a weaker saline solution. It prevents ions like Na+ (sodium) and Cl- (chlorine) from doing passing through the membrane as well as some contaminants whose molecules are too big, like iron, lead and calcium, a common mineral in kidney stones.

    Methods

    • The reverse osmosis process is often used in residential water filtration systems since it effectively rids tap water of contaminants. Historically, reverse osmosis was conceptualized for use in an industrial setting, particularly removal of salt from sea water. Installing a filtration system that uses reverse osmosis in your home can improve your family's health. Filtration systems come in a variety of different forms. Some are attached directly to the faucet head. Others are used is special pitchers with an area for a filter that is changed every few months.
