Located in South Africa, Botswana is primarily known for its safari vacations. The country's textile and clothing sectors also create fabrics and garments for companies around the world. All customs-related issues are regulated by the Customs and Excise Division of the Botswana Unified Revenue Service. Its rules are straightforward and are included in the Customs and Excise Duty Act. Visitors 18 years or older may bring alcohol and tobacco products into Botswana free of duty. Wine must not exceed two liters, and other alcoholic spirits cannot exceed 1 liter to be duty-free. For tobacco products, 200 cigarettes, 20 cigars and 250 g of tobacco will be duty free. Anything above those amounts will be subject to a fee. Other duty free items include 50 ml of perfume and 250 ml of toilet water. Items valued at less than $3000 South African coming from outside the South African Customs Union (SACU) are duty-free. New or used items from within the SACU that have a value of less than $500 South African are also considered duty-free. Section 14 of the Customs and Excise Duty Act requires the declaration of all reserved goods which are items that require a permit to enter Botswana. The Ministry of Trade and Industry regulates the list of all restricted exports and imports, and the list is available online. Domestic pets and animals require an animal health certificate from the Director of Animal Health and Production to enter the country. Soil can be imported with the permission of the Director of Crop Production and Forestry. The Customs and Excise Division (CED) has a list of specific items that cannot be imported into or exported from the country. All illegal narcotics are banned from entry into the country. Additionally, ammunition, explosives and military firearms cannot enter Botswana. Agate, aquamarine, rose quartz, tanzanite, tiger eyes and some other natural gemstones are also considered prohibited goods. Pornographic materials are also banned. Any attempt to import or export these products will result in their seizure by authorities and any individual attempting to bring prohibited goods will be prosecuted.
