How to House Train Dogs That Cannot Be Crated

    • 1). Confine the dog in a kitchen or abathroom, where accidents can easily be cleaned off tile or linoleum floors, if the dog will tolerate this type of confinement. The room should include the dog's bed, food and water bowls, and you should spend as much time as possible with the dog in this room.

    • 2). Establish a schedule for every aspect of the dog's life. This schedule should have the dog's meal times, nap times, playtime and potty breaks at the same time everyday.

    • 3). Schedule potty breaks often. If possible, take the dog outside every couple hours during the day and try to allow her to go no longer than six to eight hours at night without going outside.

    • 4). Take the dog to the same spot on the lawn to do his businesses each time you take him outside. This will help establish in his mind what he is to do when you bring him to this spot.

    • 5). Walk the dog until she urinates and/or defecates when you take her outside. Some dogs are hesitant to eliminate when on leash at the beginning of the training.

    • 6). Praise the dog and offer him a treat when he does his business outside.

    • 7). Leash the dog and take her outside immediately if you catch her in the midst of having an accident.

    • 8). Extend the areas of the house the dog has access to as he shows success in house training. Initial access to a new room should come right after he has defecated and urinated to decrease the likelihood that he'll have an accident in his new territory.
