NGO Based Initiative to Promote Child Rights in India

1
Children are considered as the indicators of the future of an economy. They bring development and prosperity that every country wishes for. But as well know that the children are also the most vulnerable part of the society and can easily be targeted. In India, the government has enacted many laws and acts to protect children and give them a better and sound development. Welfare remains the major reason why these laws have been passed.

However, the crime rate against the children has been increasing even after the enactment of strict laws. This has raised an alarming concern all over the world as children are being exploited to fulfil people's needs and wants. Considering this, it is also out social responsibility to take care of them and to protect their rights.

One such positive step has been taken by the NGOs (Non-Government Organizations). Their main aim is to look after the welfare of the people. Some NGOs in India work with the sole motive of protecting the children from becoming victims of exploitation or lack of basic necessities.

Even though India has made significant commitments towards ensuring the safety of children, there is a lot more to be done. The issue of child rights in India is caught between legal and policy commitments of children on one hand and the effect of globalisation on the other.

Over the last two decades, India have been changing its economic model in favour of free market, incorporating the process of liberalisation, globalisation and privatisation. This globalised India what we see today is witnessing the worsening levels of basic health, nutrition and shelter with all each one of them falling under the basic necessities of mankind.

Hence, children are suffering as a result of social sector cutbacks and programmes and other development initiatives that deprive families with control over their land. As a result of which, children are being employed to work in order to fulfil the families demands. This way, children are far away from enjoying their basicrights.

The presence of child abuse can be felt even at the major cities and villages. There is no law against repeated offenses against the child. Unfortunately, even the punishments for sexual offense against children attract very less punishment. Even more saddening is the fact that most of child abuse cases is handled under the laws meant for adults. There has been a requirement by the child rights activists for better law drafts against people involved in child abuse.

Along with this, people should be made aware about the basic child rights. This will produce changes in behaviour, values and attitude. Hence, it will foster social justice.
