How to Upgrade a 1.4 GHz Intel Celeron Processor
- 1). Back up any user files on the computer onto an external hard drive or flash drive.
- 2). Obtain a processor that is supported by the current motherboard as indicated in the motherboard user's manual or on the website of the motherboard or computer manufacturer. Contact technical support for the motherboard or computer if unsure which processors will work, or replace both the processor and the motherboard to ensure a perfect match and gain access to additional features available on the new motherboard.
- 3). Power off the computer and disconnect it from the power source. Remove the case cover and connect the anti-static wrist strap to a location of the frame that has bare metal showing.
- 4). Release the clip that holds the CPU cooling fan and heat-sink assembly onto the processor, disconnect the CPU fan power connector and remove the assembly from the computer.
- 5). Raise the processor locking lever and lift the Intel Celeron 1.4 GHz processor out of the socket while holding it carefully by the edges.
- 6). Insert the new processor into the socket gently, allowing it to drop in place from its own weight rather than forcing it. Ensure it is fully seated in the socket and flush before clamping the locking lever into place. Note that the processor only fits one way as indicated by a small triangular mark or cut corner on one corner of the processor and a matching mark on the socket, indicating the "Pin 1" location.
- 7). Apply a thin layer of thermal heat sink compound if none exists on the CPU heat sink and cooling fan. Ensure the heat sink and cooling fan being used match the new processor's wattage requirements and clean off any old thermal heat sink compound and apply a fresh layer if using the old heat sink again.
- 8). Place the heat sink and cooling fan squarely onto the processor and attach it to the motherboard. Connect the power lead to the motherboard socket labeled "CPU FAN" or the equivalent.
