Stop Your Dog From Barking - 3 Ways to Reduce the Problem of Barking Dogs

2
Sometimes, the simple truth is that you may have a dog that barks way too much.
Some people don't mind this, but plenty of others do.
It's important to remember that just like people, dogs use their vocal skills to communicate to their owners and their fellow pack members.
It should never be our intention to prevent our dogs from barking altogether, but more to give our dogs some guidelines as to when they can and can't show off their vocal talents for whatever reason.
  1. Don't choose a dog that is known for its barking abilities.
Different breeds are bred for different purposes, and a lot of those dogs, as part of their job description is to bark-when cornering an intruder, or tracking prey for example.
Different types of dogs have different types of barks.
Research this before you choose your dog.
  2. Don't let your dog teach you to jump up when she drops her ball in your lap and barks at you to come outside.
Only get up when she is quiet.
Message to dog = owner gets up when I am quiet.
When I bark = no result.
  3. When your dog starts to bark, give her a second or two to do her thing.
She is allowed to be a dog.
If she continues, reach out and clasp your hand gently but firmly around her muzzle.
She will probably try to wriggle from your grasp.
The other hand on the collar is called for here.
This works in 2 ways.
Firstly, the barking stops immediately; no dog can bark with their mouths shut.
You are also showing, and proving your authority and your pack leader status, by using a physical action but in a non-violent way.
You are showing yourself to be a compassionate leader but you will not have this nonsense and have no problem with asserting your wishes.
Keep hold of her collar and her muzzle until she calms down.
Only when she stops trying to pull away has she accepted your authority.
When silent and still for a further second or two, let her go, and praise her.
You are praising her for the 2 seconds of still and quiet.
She won't think that she's getting the praise for the barking.
That few seconds are long gone in a dogs mind.
You must be the pack leader.
As a follower it is your dog's duty to let the leader know what's going on elsewhere in camp and out of it.
It is also his job to hush it when pack leader says so.
Training your dog doesn't have to be difficult.
Training any animal is based on a series of body languages with consistent and persistent effort that is based on a knowledge and an understanding of how that animal has evolved through the years and what motivates them.
In order to get the best out of our dogs, and for them to get the best out of us, their owners, it's important to understand that the relationship is not based on equality but on a humane hierarchical system where there is a leader and a follower.
The owner must be the leader and the dog must be the follower.
