Obama Launches African Americans for Obama Campaign
Today, a close friend of mine forwarded a You Tube link professed to show President Obama announcing the 2012 launch of "African-Americans for Obama." My first impulse was that this was probably another "take a nutty crack at the President" joke but I figured I would take a look for kicks just on the off-chance it was legit. You see, there is actually an incredible amount of fictional information out there regarding all of the national candidates. I enjoy a tasteful joke as much as the next person but my time obviously has constraints. This link was incredibly legit.
Unbelievably, the link opened to a video of President Obama actually stating that he was launching such a program. I had to watch it twice to fully appreciate it. In the video, the President speaks of all the civil rights sacrifices black Americans have made over the years. He beats the usual mantra of his political agenda and then very subtly tells African-Americans that they need to stay together and make history again.
Really? Of course at best this video suggests that black Americans should simply vote for the President because he is a black man and that all African-Americans should only vote for other African-Americans. It suggests that black Americans can not actually be conservative or cast their vote on ideas rather than on skin color. Mostly-Right firmly honors and commends those African-Americans who sacrificed much to gain the progress we all enjoy in our society today. We also believe it is insulting to those same folks to suggest that African-Americans can not make a decision that is not based on race.
At worst, this video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=BdjoHA5ocwU) could be perceived as polite racism. Mostly-Right can only imagine what the media outrage would be if Mitt Romney launched a "White Americans for Romney Campaign." The Justice Department would likely launch a probe against the campaign as a possible hate group and the candidate's presidential campaign would be immediately dead. The national media would pounce upon such a campaign if initiated by any candidate from the middle or right.
Mostly-Right expects the media to once again ignore an issue that should be front and center. Indeed, this piece of information came to me via a friend and the slow confines of regular email. Mostly Right feels that this is a major story that most Americans would find relevant to the upcoming presidential elections. It is for these reasons that we promote the open exchange of ideas in the electronic medium of blogging.
