DIY How to Stencil a Vinyl Floor

29
    • 1). Cut out your DIY stencils using acetate or polyethylene sheets using a razor blade or scissors, as recommended in the book "Stencil Me In." Polyethylene sheets are available at most arts and crafts stores. Acetate sheets are typically used for transparencies, and they are sold at office supply stores. You can cut stencils freehand, or you can print shapes onto the transparencies from a computer for guided cutting. You may also use a store-bought stencil if you prefer.

    • 2). Position your stencils on the vinyl floor and secure them with masking tape.

    • 3). Brush bonding primer over the stencil using a synthetic-bristle brush. Bonding primer is specifically designed to adhere to nonporous surfaces, such as vinyl, whereas most general purpose primer does not stick well enough. Let the primer dry for 24 hours.

    • 4). Apply exterior vinyl paint over the stencils using a foam brush. Even though your vinyl floor is likely an interior space, exterior-grade paints hold up better against shoe and furniture scuff marks on floor surfaces. Wait 2 hours for the first coat to dry, then apply additional coats of paint as needed.

    • 5). Remove the stencils after 24 hours, but do not walk on the floor for a full 48 hours.
