Structural Scoliosis Treatment
- Factors to be considered when deciding the course of treatment for scoliosis include age, gender, severity and location of the spine curvature and the general health of the patient.
- Braces are considered for children with curvatures of 25 to 45 percent to prevent progression of the curvature. Braces do not correct scoliosis.
- During surgery for scoliosis, the vertebrae are joined together and supported with steel rods and hooks attached to the spine. Surgery is recommended for adolescents and adults with 50 percent or more curvature.
- Chiropractic manipulation, electrical stimulation, nutritional supplements and exercise are used as alternative treatments for scoliosis. Studies have not shown these methods to prevent curvature of the spine, but neither do they worsen the curve. Exercise is encouraged to decrease loss of function.
- If left untreated, scoliosis can cause breathing problems, reduced lung development and some heart problems.
