How to Repair Caulking on Siding
- 1). Test old caulk by poking it with a screwdriver. If it is brittle or cracks, scrape the old caulk out with the screwdriver or putty knife. Use a wire brush to remove remaining caulk, and blow out dust with a shop vac. Wipe the area clean.
- 2). Spritz some silicon lubricant on the metal caulk gun plunger for easier insertion of caulk cartridge. Install caulk cartridge.
- 3). Prime the area to be re-caulked with a hair dryer if the weather is cool. Heat will maximize adhesion.
- 4). Apply the caulk to the damaged area. Smooth the caulk with a putty knife.
- 5). Seal around hose spigots by removing screws that hold the spigot in place. Scrape out the old caulk, and squeeze the new caulk behind the mounting plate. Re-screw the plate back in place, and smooth caulk with a putty knife.
