International College Scholarships
- The Boren Awards for International Study provides scholarships to undergraduate students for study abroad in countries that have traditionally been underrepresented in study abroad programs. Geographic regions that qualify under the Boren Scholarships program include Central and Western Europe, the Middle East and Latin America. As of 2011, selected applicants receive up to $20,000 for a full academic year, $10,000 for an academic semester or $8,000 for summer programs. Application requirements include two recommendation letters, official transcripts, a language proficiency form and two essays explaining the applicant's program and career goals. Scholarship winners must commit to working for the U.S. federal government in an area dealing with national security within three years of graduation.
- Established by the 2000 International Academic Opportunity Act, the Gilman Scholarship Program offers undergraduate college students funding for studying programs around the world. Awards can be used to offset the cost of living tuition, books, local transportation, health insurance and international travel. As of 2011, the program provides more than 2,300 scholarships in amounts up to $5,000. Average awards are approximately $4,000. Gilman Scholarship Program applicants are also eligible to receive the Critical Need Language Supplement. Languages accepted under the program include Chinese, Arabic, Korean and Swahili. Selected Critical Need Language Supplement applicants receive $3,000, for a total possible scholarship of $8,000 from the Gilman Scholarship Program. Gilman Scholarship applicants must be U.S. citizens and recipients of the Federal Pell Grant.
- According to the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities, Hispanic college students participate in study abroad programs at approximately 50 percent the rate of non-Hispanic students. To encourage more Hispanic college students to study outside of the United States, the Hispanic Study Abroad Scholarship Program offers $1,000 scholarships to students participating in Global Learning Semesters semester-long programs. Students must be enrolled at an HACU institution and at least 18 years of age. Additionally, applicants must have earned college credits equivalent to two semesters and possess a minimum 2.5 GPA to apply. Scholarship winners are selected by authorized Hispanic Study Abroad Scholars representatives at HACU colleges and universities.
- American students interested in teaching in Japan can apply for scholarships through the Association of Teachers of Japanese Bridging Project. Approximately 60 to 100 scholarships are awarded in the amount of $2,500 (semester programs) and $4,000 (academic year programs), as of 2011. Scholarships are available to U.S. citizens enrolled as an undergraduate student at a college or university in the United States. All majors are eligible to apply. An official transcript, essay and letter of recommendation are required with the application. In conjunction with the U.S.-Japan Bridging Foundation's Bridging Project, Morgan Stanley offers two $7,500 awards to students studying in Japan and interested in pursuing a career in economics or finance.
