How to make friends while traveling?

You must have noticed that the fun quotient of any trip multiplies if you have friends to crack a joke or share experiences with. Sometimes people travel alone and they go through moments of loneliness in spite of being comfortable in traveling alone. It also happens while traveling in a group that you want to absorb the place more by interacting with locals and other travelers to make the most of the trip.

People often face problem in opening up to strangers, the contrary of which is an extremely useful skill which will be beneficial all life.

If you are already not blessed with the skill of making friends, good news is that it can be acquired over time with practice.

-        Open up, let go of the inhibition to approach somebody first. What’s the worst that can happen? You don’t know the person anyway and probably won’t see again ever, so there is no harm even if things don’t go as planned.

-        Smile! You won’t believe how good an ice breaker it is. The easiest one around. Make sure it’s not creepy, made up or that of a pile on. Just be natural and genuine.

-         First liners? Well the cliché’s are still good. You can start with weather. Trust me it works. Complementing is one way –“I love your shoes” or just start with “where are you from?” and the rest will fall into place. If you can make your opening lines interesting, 99% chances are that you have already engaged the person in the conversation.

-         Try and find out some common trait between you and the person, for example when I travel in a bus I generally like to start with ‘how the driver is honking too much and they should be penalized’ or about some other fellow passenger who just can’t stop snoring. It’s a good icebreaker.

-         Another way is to approach someone with a problem. If you are new to a place and you can approach somebody on the coffee table next to you with your queries, people just love to answer questions and help out.

-         Use internet to meet travelers and locals to your destination, contact them and strike a conversation. It’s quite convenient and lot less pressure on nerves.
