Running a Bed and Breakfast - Who is a Good Candidate and What Are Some of the Necessary Skills?

16
If you are thinking of running a bed and breakfast, be sure that you are the right person for the job.
If you are one who by nature enjoys meeting, greeting, and working with people, and you are organized and have good personal habits, a bed and breakfast business could be for you.
Good Potential B&B Candidates Assuming that you meet the above qualifications, here are a few candidates whose life-situations tend to be conducive to running a bed and breakfast:
  • You are retired, or are an early retiree
  • You are widowed, or divorced, living in a home alone
  • You have a home large enough for a full-scale B&B
  • You are seeking a career change
  • You are a home-maker seeking supplementary income
  • You have a multiple bedroom luxury apartment in an area with lot of year-round, or seasonal tourism
  • You are willing to consider a B&B in a new home-search
Good B&B Host Habits and Skills There are many questions to ask as you picture yourself running a bed and breakfast.
Try to answer some of the following about your personal habits, life-skills, and attributes:
  • This one is obvious: Do you enjoy making breakfast? People come for the view, or the location, or a million other reasons, but they remember that fantastic breakfast you served them before they set out on their adventure.
  • Do you maintain a clean and neat home? The overall cleanliness of your B&B, especially the bathrooms and kitchen, has a major impact on your guests impression of you, the host.
Are you naturally a tidy person?
  • Are you good at keeping records? This is a business, after all.
Are you organized? Do you tend to enjoy keeping things in their proper place? Are you the kind of person who knows what is in your first aid kit, how to use those items, and where it's located?
  • Are you a veritable storehouse of information about your local attractions? You are going to get asked a million questions by guests! Do you love the lore of your town and enjoy talking about history?
  • Can you be diplomatic? Or do you insist on making, and winning your point? It is almost guaranteed that you are going to play host to people who do not think exactly like you do.
  • Are you tolerant of other people and their lifestyles? You are going to be meeting a lot of different people from all walks of life, and from all over the world.
Can you be a good ambassador?
If you have a tough time answering yes to any of these questions, it might be well for you to do a self-inventory to see if there are areas where you need some work.
Remember that as a bed and breakfast host you are not the smiling-for-a-salary-desk-clerk at the local motel.
You are the B&B, and it is you who sets the tone when you open the front door to your guests.
