How to Make a Covered Tissue Box With a Gathered Top
- 1). Measure the distance around the box lengthwise and widthwise, not including the tissue opening. Add 5 inches to each dimension.
- 2). Cut out a rectangular piece of fabric using the dimensions you calculated and iron it free of wrinkles.
- 3). Fold the top edge over 1/4 inch and pin it in place with straight pins. If you are making the cover for a square box, the top edge can be either of the shorter sides. For a rectangular box, it must be one of the long sides.
- 4). Sew the top edge with a straight stitch.
- 5). Lay the fabric out right side up with the top edge farthest from you. Fold the fabric in half lengthwise with the right sides together, pin them into place, and then sew them together.
- 6). Pin the bottom edges together and sew it shut. Turn the bag right side out when you are finished.
- 7). Cut out two fabric strips that are 1 inch wide and as long as your original rectangle. Tack the pieces together with their right sides facing each other and sew them together along both edges.
- 8). Turn the fabric tube right side out, pin it 3 or 4 inches below the top of the bag and sew it into place.
- 9). Feed a cord or ribbon through the tube to act as the drawstring.
