Kanantik Reef and Jungle Resort in Belize
Kanantik Reef and Jungle Resort in Belize
Welcome to the Kanantik Reef and Jungle Resort in Stann Creek, Belize!
With the jungle to its back and the Caribbean to its front, the Kanantik Resort prides itself in being "eco-sensitive". This means it takes its surrounding environment into consideration in all its decisions, from construction to drainage to cleaning. The result is a resort that represents an extension of its extraordinary setting: the vibrant jungles and reefs of Belize.
At Kanantik, you can choose from all-inclusive and cabana only options during your vacation. All-inclusive stays include meals, drinks and accommodations along with all guided tours, from scuba diving to birdwatching. Customized and seasonal packages are also available.
Kanantik Swimming Pool
The Kanantik swimming pool is ideal for a convenient dip, but the best swimming (and diving, and snorkeling) is right there in the Caribbean. Boat tours to the Belize Barrier Reef (the world's second largest) and nearby islands like South Water Caye are a necessary part of your Kanantik itinerary.
On the way back from our snorkel tour of South Water Caye, a pod of dolphins hung out with us for at least twenty minutes.
One even right in front of the boat for what seemed like ages, playing under the current.
Jaguar Tracks!
Many of Kanantik's attractions are on the surface -- but one of its greatest requires a closer look.
The Kanantik Reef and Jungle Resort is located right next to the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary, which also happens to be the world's first jaguar preserve. One morning, we woke to jaguar tracks spiraling all over the beach and the sand between our cabins. At least one jaguar was prowling outside as we slept, most likely hunting for the agoutis that live in the area.
Although we didn't see the jaguar himself, there's something compellingly primal about knowing he was so close. I don't know any other Central America hotel that offers that experience -- the almost-guarantee of seeing an actual jaguar print (or hundreds!).
The nearby wildlife sanctuary offers plenty of hiking opportunities, for both novice and experienced hikers. Other tours during your stay can include canoeing in the Cabbage Haul Creek, using sea kayaks or Hobie cats, or taking a day trip to visit the Xunantunich Mayan ruins on Belize's western border.
Kanantik Resort Cabanas
Although charmingly basic on the outside, the all-natural cabanas at the Kanantik Reef and Jungle Resort are spacious luxury suites, complete with sitting area, bed adrift in gauzy mosquito netting (necessary in this part of the world, though I only saw a few mosquitoes), well-appointed bathroom with a separate changing area, and an indoor/outdoor shower hybrid facing the sea. Rooms are air-conditioned.
The thatched roofs evoke the jungle canopy just outside.
There aren't TVs in these rooms -- why watch TV when you can watch for jaguars? -- but there is a television and a large book exchange in the lobby, along with free wireless internet and a computer for guests to use.
Mealtime at the Kanantik Resort
If you think your cabana roof is impressive, wait until you see the arching palapa ceiling in the dining area; you have to crane your neck to see the top!
Meals at the Kanantik Resort are unerringly delicious, though don't expect local Belizean cuisine if that's what you're looking to try. There is no menu at dinner -- in most cases you're described a couple choices by your server. Because of the remoteness of the resort, if you have any food allergies or dietary constraints we recommend explaining when you book.
Jaguars aren't the only wildlife roaming around Belize's Kanantik Reef and Jungle Resort. At the southern edge of the Kanantik property, we spied this crocodile sunning himself where a jungle creek meets the sea.
This really is the jungle -- and an eco-friendly resort -- so don't be surprised if you find some "wildlife" in your room (usually, just a few small insects).
While the surrounding jungle and reef at Kanantik offer endless opportunities for exploration, make sure you take the time to relax! Fortunately, there are plenty of places: Adirondack chairs and hammocks strewn all over the beach, the living room in your cabana, your wraparound private deck, or in one of the lounge chairs by the pool.
