Bio Brief: Ann Curry
Ann Curry was Born:
... in Guam on November 19, 1956, to her Japanese mother and American father, a WW II-era G.I. stationed in Japan after the war. Her parents were not initially allowed to marry; post-war, the American military wouldn't allow it. But after time had passed, Ann's father was able to return to Japan to marry his love.
Growing up with Ann:
An Army brat, Ann and her family hopped about the country.
Sheâ??s lived in California, Virginia, Oregon and Japan. She attended the University of Oregon School of Journalism and graduated in 1978.
Ann's First Job & The Early Years:
After receiving her diploma (or shortly before), Ann accepted an internship at KTVL in Medford, Oregon. She eventually became the station's first female news reporter.
Her journalism career soon took her to the NBC affiliate in Portland, Oregon, and the CBS affiliate in Los Angeles. She'd return to NBC in 1990 as its Chicago-based reporter. And it wouldn't be long before Ann was anchor of NBC News at Sunrise and a featured journalist on the newly launched MSNBC. In 1997, she officially became Today show news anchor.
Becoming a Talk Show Host:
p]Ann remains news anchor on Today, though she is truly a part of the show's power quartet, which includes co-hosts Meredith Vieira and Matt Lauer and weatherman Al Roker. She is also co-host of NBCâ??s evening news magazine, Dateline NBC.
As a journalist, Ann has conducted exclusive interviews with Liberia's Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, the first female elected President of an African nation; the first highly sought after interview with Thomas Hamill, the truck driver for Halliburton subsidiary KBR, who escaped captivity in Iraq; the first interview with accused spy Wen Ho Lee after he was cleared of all charges of espionage against the United States; and the first interview with the parents of the McCaughey septuplets.
In 2005, Ann accompanied First Lady Laura Bush throughout Africa. They talked about various issues that plague the continent, including the HIV/AIDS epidemic, women's rights and education.
What Does the Future Hold:
About Talk Shows theory? Ann could easily make the transition to full-blown talk show host. The Ann Curry Show, as we see it, would have a strong journalism foundation, but would employee much of what Oprah has made the standard: inviting set, intriguing guests, revealing dialogue. Imagine the interview portion of The Daily Show without the biting humor as lead-in.
