How to Install Herbicidal Root Barriers
- 1). Look at the ground and identify a location five to six feet away from the structure you are trying to protect, such as a sidewalk. The area should be at least 10 feet from all trees and three feet from shrubs to prevent from killing them.
- 2). Dig a 2-foot-deep trench that is 3 to 6 inches wide around the perimeter of the location. Use a spade with a flat edge to dig instead of a shovel, since spades cut through existing roots easier.
- 3). Insert a piece of the herbicide root barrier into the end of the trench, standing it up vertically. Place the next piece of barrier at the end of the first piece, overlapping it by at least four to six inches to prevent roots from growing through the seam.
- 4). Continue laying sections of barrier until you reach the end. Cut off the excess barrier with a sharp utility knife.
- 5). Fill the trench back in with soil and then stomp down on the ground with your feet to firm it.
- 6). Water the area well with a garden hose to further settle the soil and remove any air pockets.
