How to Grow Dwarf Pear Trees in Mississippi

1
    • 1). Buy a young dwarf pear tree from your local nursery. Look for a tree with smooth bark and healthy green foliage. Don't buy any trees with scaly bark or wilted leaves. Ask for a tree that is between 1 and 2 years old.

    • 2). Prepare the planting area. Look for a spot that gets lots of sunlight with well draining soil. Work the soil with a garden fork to aerate and loosen the soil. Spread a 6-inch layer of compost, manure or peat moss over the soil and blend it in with the garden fork.

    • 3). Dig a hole that is the same depth as the nursery container, but twice as wide. Tap the sides of the nursery container to loosen the soil and gently lift the dwarf pear tree out of the container. Shake loose some of the soil around the root ball. Place the tree in the hole and spread the roots out over it. Untangle any roots that wrap around the root ball. If you can't untangle them, cut them. These roots pose a danger to the pear tree as they may strangle the other roots as the tree grows.

    • 4). Backfill the hole with the soil you dug up earlier. Work slowly and pack the soil around the roots to prevent any air pockets around them. When the hole is filled, water the sapling thoroughly.

    • 5). Water the tree daily for a full week to help get it established. You can skip watering on days when it rains. After the first week, reduce your watering frequency to once every week unless it happens to rain.
