How to Dye Scrapbook Paper

    Stamped Dyed Scrapbook Paper

    • 1). Cover your work area with a vinyl tablecloth. Put on gloves to protect your skin from dye stains.

    • 2). Cut watercolor paper so it easily slides in and out of your microwave.

    • 3). Pour two caps of resist medium onto a paper plate.

    • 4). Dip a foam craft brush into the medium. Paint the medium onto a rubber stamp with the foam brush. Stamp in a pattern or randomly all over one side of watercolor paper. Reapply the medium to the stamp in order to keep the stamp wet. Allow the watercolor paper to air dry.

    • 5). Pour a cap of fabric or paper dye onto a paper plate. Dye can be purchased in the grocery store laundry aisle or in craft and discount stores. Dyes are sold in liquid and powder form. Follow the manufacturer's directions to mix the powder dye into liquid form. If mixing powder dye, pour 1 teaspoon of dye onto the plate.

    • 6). Press the sponge lightly into the dye and then randomly all over the top of the paper. Use multiple colors of dye for a varied effect. If using one color, sponge over the entire surface. If using multiple colors, leave spots on the paper free of dye so you'll have places to dab the other colors.

    • 7). Put paper towels over the bottom of the microwave. Place the watercolor paper on top. Microwave on high for two minutes. Remove from microwave.

    • 8). Wet a natural sponge, and lightly rub the dyed paper to rinse away the resist medium. Return to the microwave for one minute or until paper is dry to the touch.

    Splattered Dyed Scrapbook Paper

    • 1). Follow the instructions in Section 1, Steps 1-3.

    • 2). Roll a natural sponge in the resist medium until the sponge is saturated. Add more resist medium to the plate and sponge if necessary.

    • 3). Place the watercolor paper on top of the vinyl tablecloth. Shake the sponge over the paper, allowing the resist medium to splatter over the paper's surface. Repeat until the splatters meet your preferences. The medium touching the paper will be white or a lighter tone of whatever color dye you use on your paper. Allow paper to dry.

    • 4). Follow Section 1, Steps 5-8.
