It is important to state that not all Montessori schools are created equal, but then again, neither are all private or public schools! There are three main accreditation organizations for Montessori school in the Unite States.
The American Montessori Society, The Montessori School Accreditation Commission and internationally recognitions are accredited through Association Montessori Internationale or The International Montessori Council.
Many Montessori schools will also apply to go through the National Council for Private School Accreditation as well.
In the United States AMS is the most popular accrediting process and is based on the AMS's School Accreditation Standards and Criteria revised in June of 2008.
First and foremost, they ensure that each school follows state and federal curriculum guidelines.
Vision, Purpose, Governance, Leadership, Personnel, Teaching and Learning (Educational Nature), Learner Outcomes, Facility Resources, Administrative and Support Systems as well as the Strategic Plan of each school is taken into consideration.
The accreditation process is a long process of evaluations of each category taking anywhere from 24 to 48 months.
This can be much longer then the accreditation process of a regular school or even a university program! So you can be sure that the school is to the appropriate standards of education if it is accredited.
But also remember that the accreditation process can also be expensive so it is not uncommon for newer or smaller Montessori schools to not have accreditations.
It is important to weigh this into your decision of whether the school is appropriate for your child or not.
