What is a satellite phone? In regular English (without all the high-tech lingo that usually goes along with electronic equipment), it's a phone that receives and delivers it's signal from satellites up in the sky, rather than relying on unpredictable cell phone towers on the ground.
How is that beneficial? Think about it for a minute.
For what ever reason, the earth has been going through some very strange weather conditions.
We've had record-breaking earthquakes, hurricanes, tornadoes, and tsunamis.
Because of these horrific disasters, communication towers for cell phones, and even land lines, have been wiped out.
This has literally made it impossible for our communication-dependent society to function when a disaster like that strikes.
For that reason ALONE, it just makes sense for our modern society to put those resources in space, where they won't be harmed, or destroyed, by these natural occurrences! Let's scale it down a little bit.
Fortunately, not everyone will have to go through the terror that natural disasters can bring.
But, have you ever found yourself out of your 'calling area', and you needed a phone, but were completely stuck without service? Nearly everyone has been in, or can identify with, that situation.
It's a pretty helpless, hopeless situation, isn't it? Having a satellite phone completely eliminates that concern.
There won't even be the aggravation of dropped calls, because satellite service literally covers the whole planet! If you have children, think about how valuable that would be.
Your teenager is out on a date, or even a little road trip with friends (Spring Break, maybe?) Your child will always have a direct line to you, and you'll never have to worry about whether or not you're even going to get a call in the event that something happens.
All they'll have to do is pick up the phone and dial.
It also gives senior citizens to have a little more freedom when travelling.
For older people who like to get out and see the world after retirement, having constant cell phone service means that help is ALWAYS just a phone call away if they need it.
Satellite phone prices have dropped considerably in recent years, too.
So even cost is no longer a major mortgage-the-house-to-get-it kind of issue.
Especially when considering the peace of mind that it will undoubtedly give.
Right now is really a great time, all things considered, to get one.
While you may argue that "bad stuff like that always happens to someone else", why take that risk? NO one knows when something bad is going to happen.
We can always hope and pray that it doesn't.
But how much better, and more tolerable, would it be if we're a little more prepared for something like that? It obviously doesn't take the nightmare of the situation away, but being able to communicate with our loved ones during a stressful time is very powerful! It gives us the comfort of knowing we don't have to go through the situation alone.
