Bilby
The bilby (Macrotis lagotis) is a marsupial of the bandicoot family found in Australia's Northern Territory, southern Queensland and parts of Western Australia.
Bilbies are said to prefer dry, hot, humid areas with little vegetation, as well as in spinifex grasslands and acacia shrubs.
The bilby is a nocturnal creature and so is difficult to encounter on daytime trips into the Australian bush.
The greater bilby, usually referred to as the bilby, is the largest of the bndicoots with a body measuring up to 55 centimetres.
Its tail adds another 29 centimetres or so to the length of the body.
The greater bilby is on Australia's list of endangered species. The lesser bilby is believed to be extinct.
The Australia Endangered Species Program has chosen the bilby its mascot representing all endangered species.
A campaign to replace the Easter bunny with the indigenous and endangered bilby hasn't had much success, although perhaps in the future the Easter bilby may yet supersede the introduced non-Australian bunny.
