Tips for Healthy Relations
Miracle, a large number of poems, all are marked for their brevity and
lucid style, yet with notable irony is posted at www.poemhunter.com by the poet,
RM Shanmugam
The content of his poems, abound with much experience drawn out of life,
makes them reliable and broaden the mental horizon of the reader. Some of these verses are collected as a wedding gift to Mr. Karthick(Singapore), his nephew.
As a poet, Shanmugam versify his thoughts and share with the netizens. His themes include a variety of things like love, silence, violence, strength, courage, time, nature and what not, everything. Not exceeding ten lines, his poems are brief and confine to the point of saying without any figures of speech.
He describes the celebrations as ‘vanity empties granary'. This is the last line of four-lined verse, which seems to be an epitome. A comparison between two things is more predominantly brought forward in his lines which are often embedded in experiences drawn from life. He says the silence is more dangerous than violence, for the former one easily breaks the marital relations when compared to the latter.
He emphasizes on the beauty of heart. Having good looks may be fortunate, but it is no less to be of good heart. People do not care to think of external beauty, if they would not find a good heart in that body. Hindu philosophy says that the body is the abode of God. It is this philosophy that is reiterated in this verse. The name of this verse, ‘The heart looks more than looks' is the very essence of this poem, the main characteristic of a mini-poem The title plays an important role in elucidating the entire meaning of the poem.
Love and love thoughts fill a majority of his verses. Humorously he says that falling in love continues forever. With the lack of experience or patience, the love may be broken and yet lack of memory makes one fall in love again. So it is a continuous process. He depicts the nuances of a thing in a number of verses. Love is continued where the poor live, with the mutual help, in the barter of things and in togetherness and sacrifices. In a nutshell, ‘love slaves you'.
With the jumble of words, he creates an interesting thought. Saying of ‘strength and courage', he weaves a lovely verse.
Loved by a woman, I get strength
Loving woman, I get the courage
Loved by the woman whom I love,
I get strength and courage together.
In this poem the secret of the success of nuptial life is splendidly described. The woman referred to here in this verse is the real wife. Being loved by the wife gives strength. Loving the wife gives courage. Loving and being loved, when loved mutually, it gives the strength and courage together- a strengthened bond and a courageous encounter with the life- altogether a heavenly nuptial life. This is the ‘bio-force' he name it.
I was born to my parents, but not for them
I was born with my siblings, but not for them
I was not born to my spouse, but for her
This is the specialty of the bio-force.
It is always love, but not the hatred that breed the good relations between two individuals, may not be the couple. It is always kissing, but not pinching that glue the human relations. Moreover love or kiss in their pure forms unadulterated with hatred or pinch only work out of maintaining healthy relations.
To pinch and kiss or to kiss and pinch-
The intention is same; hatred.
The reception is same; sore.
Kiss can't erase or compensate the sore.
One should have a ‘Love's Yardstick' to pull out oneself into the safer zone of opt-maintenance of relations.
The depth of love
Is the height of jealousy
The height of love
Is the depth of pining.
Relation –creator, the poet reveals fair referee tips to cement the different kinships. Followed, the families will be happy and the homes heavenly.
A word to a mother/father:
Don't feel being a servant
In the family of your son
If it is in your belly
You had been his servant
On your accord in his childhood
With no return for your belly
A word to the mother/father-in-law:
Don't compete with your son's wife for his love,
He must have seen the steps ahead, not behind.
She stays after you; he must lean on her.
A graceful exit will earn you her love.
A word to the friend:
You are my friend; you might be useful
You are my friend; you have still steam
Either as a cap or footwear, I will keep you
Till you serve me, till I require you.
This way, Shanmugam enchants for good relations to be strengthened, fortified and glued. He says emphatically about the ‘denotation and connotation' of neighborly relations too.
Fence means boundary by denotation
Fence means barrier by connotation
Good fence makes good crops
Good fence makes good neighbors
Submissiveness is the key to enter the palace and live in of happy, safe and trouble-free life. All ships sail unsinkable with compliance and modesty.
No friendships, no courtships,
No partnerships and no companionships
Could run a long run
Unless one of the two is submissive
Submissiveness is not slavery. This understanding when coupled with the discretion of bolted and being bolted turns life evergreen and ever teen.
To be humble is not to be a slave
Though outwardly they may look same
To be in the cell with the doors bolted in
Is not being it with the doors bolted out.
Moreover, being non-hypocritical, a child's language strengthens the bonds together.
Languages are variants:
Official, legal, literary,
Poetical, scientific, spoken
Child language is superior
In that it lacks hypocrisy.
A language which is not authoritative or power-longing, commanding or demanding will not hurt anyone and thereby keeps healthier and happier tones.
To conclude with, though be prosaic in preaching, Shanmugam's letters pave a way to happy life maintaining good relations and good results.
