How to Install an Autometer Gauge

5
    • 1). Determine where the gauge is going to be mounted. Smaller Autometer gauges can be installed in a gauge pod, which is fastened to the inside of the A-pillar or on the dash. Larger instruments such as Autometer tachometers and speedometers can be mounted in the dash itself, if possible, in place of the stock instrument that the Autometer gauge is replacing. Keep in mind that where and how the gauge or gauges are installed depends on the vehicle in which they are being used.

    • 2). Locate or drill a hole in the firewall so that the wires and sending unit of the gauge can go from the interior to the engine bay. Most cars will have existing holes in the firewall for the wiring harnesses. If you cannot locate an appropriate hole, use an electric drill and and a drill bit to drill a new hole. Install the rubber grommet supplied with the gauge into the hole so that the wires do not rub against the metal.

    • 3). Route the wires for the gauge through the hole. The number of wires that the gauge uses will depend on what type of gauge you are installing. Most gauges will need to be wired to a power source in the fuse box. Depending on the type of gauge, there might also be some type of sending unit. For instance, a manual oil pressure gauge will have a tube that needs to go from the engine, through the hole in the firewall and into the gauge.

    • 4). Connect the wires according to the directions. This procedure will vary depending on the gauge. For instance, an electric tachometer will need to be wired to the coil or some other location on the ignition system to send the appropriate signal to the gauge. Consult the directions for the specific gauge you are installing.

    • 5). Snap the gauge lights into the back of the gauges. Connect the black wire on the lights to a suitable ground on the inside of the dash, which should be metal and free of paint. Use wire strippers to expose the end of the wire, connect the wire to a metal eyelet with wire crimpers and then screw the eyelet to the ground. Drill a small hole if necessary. Splice the white wire from the gauge light into the wiring harness for the dash lights. Tape the connection securely with electrical tape.

    • 6). Mount the gauge, ensuring that it is installed securely and visible from the driver's seat. Start the car and test the gauge to ensure that it is functioning correctly.
