Despite how embarrassing it might be, doctors say you absolutely must seek treatment for genital warts. These harmless-looking, flesh-colored bumps on your private parts are actually the most common type of sexually transmitted disease.

<span style="font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt;"> </span>

When you just ignore them, you not only risk infecting your partners during anal, vaginal and oral intercourse, you also expose yourself to various complications, such as cancer of the reproductive organs, most notably of the cervix.

<span style="font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt;"> </span>

Fortunately, you need not take such unnecessary risks, as your doctor can recommend the most appropriate genital wart treatment for you.

<span style="font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt;"> </span>

Although there is no cure for genital warts (like cold sores, they are caused by a virus that never leaves your body even though the warts may), it pays to know the symptoms, causes, and complications as well as the various genital wart treatments, so you are an informed patient who can make good decisions.

<span style="font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt;"> </span>

<span style="font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt;"><span style="color: #ff0000;">** </span>Symptoms to Look For</span>

<span style="font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt;"> </span>

Keep in mind that men as well as women can be infected by genital warts, although the locations will understandably vary.

<span style="font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt;"> </span>

In women, you can find them growing on the vaginal walls, the cervix, the vulva and the area between the anus and the external genitals.

<span style="font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt;"> </span>

In men, you will see them on the penile shaft, the scrotum and the anus. And because it can be transmitted through oral sex, you will also find them growing on the insides of your throat and mouth.

<span style="font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt;"> </span>

Just so you know what the treatment for genital warts targets, you will see and feel relatively small, flesh-colored swellings in the above-mentioned areas that can also turn grayish in color.

<span style="font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt;"> </span>

You will also feel discomfort and bleeding during intercourse and itchy feelings, even under the most hygienic of conditions.

<span style="font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt;"> </span>

Be aware, however, that often there are no immediate symptoms to alert you that indeed, you are a victim of genital warts. You may not know that genital warts are present until you find them growing in larger clusters looking eerily like small cauliflowers. And if you do discover such clusters, hightail it to your doctor's office.

<span style="font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt;"> </span>

And even if you do not see or feel such clusters, when you know your partner has genital warts, the logical step is to also see a doctor yourself.

<span style="font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt;"> </span>

<span style="font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt;"><span style="font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt;"><span style="color: #ff0000;">** </span></span>Causes and Complications</span>

<span style="font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt;"> </span>

The human papillomavirus (HPV), which is the main culprit behind genital warts, has 75 strains, although only 2 strains are responsible for 90 percent of cases.

<span style="font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt;"> </span>

The bad thing about HPV is that it is so highly contagious that 2 out 3 persons will develop genital warts upon sexual contact with an infected person.  And as previously mentioned, you have to seek immediate genital wart treatment if you do not want to suffer the complications. These can include cancers of cervix, anus and penis and problems during pregnancy.

<span style="font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt;"><span style="font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt;"><span style="color: #ff0000;">** </span></span>Medications and Surgery</span>

<span style="font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt;"> </span>

Treatment for genital warts varies, but the two major genital wart treatments are medications and surgery.

<span style="font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt;"> </span>

Your doctor can prescribe topical medications that are applied directly to the affected areas of the skin, which include generic medicines such as imiquimod, trichloroacetic acid, podophyllin and podofilox. Yes, you need a prescription for these medications, as they can be dangerous when applied inappropriately.

<span style="font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt;"> </span>

Surgical treatment for genital warts may be necessary if your HPV infection does not respond to medication, or if you have large warts or if you are pregnant. Your doctor will choose from such options as cryotherapy (freezing with liquid nitrogen), electrocautery (burning of warts through an electrical current), surgical excision and laser treatments.  Keep in mind that each of these genital wart treatments has its pros and cons so it pays to discuss your options with your doctor.

<span style="font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt;"> </span>

Although there is a variety of treatments for genital warts, the trick is in catching the warts early so that appropriate treatment can begin as soon as possible.
