The Internet made an enormous cultural impression on the entire world as soon as it started to become popular; to say that it has turned the life we live upside down and changed the human race forever is a considerable understatement. In fact, the last time an invention that could be termed a €medium' as well just a form of art was introduced was when the film industry established itself as the Next Big Thing, around the adolescence of the 20th century, and it did so first in New York but more famously in LA.
The year-round sunny climate made it perfect for shooting movies, and years later it also proved a centre for technology companies in the Silicon Valley. However, in today's ever-shrinking world, LA's spot on the cultural map is becoming less and less pronounced. Countries all around the world are getting in on the game, especially online dating. Some of the biggest names are based in Dallas, TX, Seattle, WA and even Vancouver, BC - CANADA! Even the Canucks have got involved in it, and LA is no longer the place where a web entrepreneur HAS to set up their office.
California does have its fair share of dating sites - giant eHarmony is based in Santa Monica - but it's hard to go from being proud of your hometown for providing the celluloid blueprint for young lovers around the world, to watching everything change. The net is taking over and soon the Earth will simply be one giant country anyway, where no-one leaves their bed and conduct relationships entirely through their computers. I just hope that there are a few more years of traditional dating to go, as we're not ready to give it up just yet for fear of not being able to learn any €new tricks'.
Taking a girl to Huntington Beach for a day of sunbathing and surfing is something you can't do online, however dating sites do give you the opportunity to find the perfect partner you can surf with. It is sometimes hard to give up the old traditions when everyone is telling you to get with the new. A bit of patience will lead you to find that it often really IS newer and better than the original, and once you realise that it will be plain sailing. I hope some of these dating sites come to LA though - mainly so I can apply to work with them and have as many phone numbers as I like!
