Vienna Coffee House Etiquette
- Guests at a Viennese coffeehouse are expected to remain mostly quiet, speaking only in hushed tones when necessary. Because the coffeehouse is mainly a retreat for reading, writing and other quiet activities, speaking loudly is considered inappropriate.
- The waiter, better known as the Herr Ober, does not approach guests right away. Guests should not try to get the waiter's attention by waving or whistling. Rather, they should choose an area to sit and begin enjoying the environment, allowing the waiter to approach later.
- While the service is not usually immediate, waiters do not expect customers to move on quickly. It is not considered rude for guests at a Viennese coffeehouse to purchase a small cup of coffee and stay all day. Waiters remain attentive to their guests, refilling coffee cups and water glasses as needed.
