How to Describe the Climate of the Classroom
- 1). Visit the classroom several times observing a range of lessons and take note of the physical environment. Observe whether or not the classroom is safe, whether it is bright and if students' work is displayed. Check that adequate resources are available. Notice the children's participation in lessons and whether all are included in the teacher-pupil interaction. Observe the dynamic in the classroom, noting positive or negative aspects of relationships.
- 2). Gain the confidence of the teacher by showing that you are there in a supportive capacity. Ask him about his morale and job satisfaction and how he views the school as a whole. Note whether or not he feels supported by other teachers, school administrators and parents. Talk to him about aspects of his work or classroom that he would like to change. If possible, look at pupils' course work and examination grades.
- 3). Interview a sample of parents, or ask them to complete questionnaires on their child's progress and experience in the classroom. Collate all the information you have gathered and write a commentary on your findings. Follow the school's confidentiality and safety policies throughout your observation. Read through your report critically, looking for evidence of bias or subjectivity. Complete a final draft of your report and deliver it to your supervisor.
