    • Pear trees normally bear sweet mellow pears. However, there are other pear trees grown mainly for their decorative properties such as their nice self-shaping form or spring blooms. These more decorative trees are ornamental pears, and they are easy to grow in certain areas. The main thing you must pay attention to, when deciding which type to grow, is how they hold up over time, based conditions in your area.

    Aristocrat Pear

    • The aristocrat pear tree was developed to improve on the more brittle limbs of the Bradford. It reaches heights of around 30 to 40 feet and is self-shaping. Springtime brings out the small white blooms of the tree, while fall induces deep red leaves. Tolerant of many types of soil and weather conditions, aristocrats will live down to zone 4 and survive droughts.

    Bradford Pear

    • Originating in China, the Bradford pear has some difficulty with its limb structure, which is made worse by its mature height of 60 feet. The limbs tend to snap off under weight and high winds. In the spring while flowers are produced, and shortly thereafter, small non-edible fruit develop. Considered an invasive species by some, you will notice plenty of seedlings appearing after a time. Keep them pulled if you don't want them to take over an area.

    Cleveland Pear

    • The Cleveland pear grows to a shorter 25 foot height and has a stable limb structure that is a narrow 15 feet. It likes full sun and does well down to zone 4. Cleveland pears are tolerant of drought conditions, but prefer damp soil that is well draining. Leaves turn a nice orange in the fall and white blooms develop in the spring. Fruit development is not edible.
