College students who are planning to apply to medical school can benefit from participation in a summer medical school program. These programs offer intensive science courses that give students a sense of what the medical school curriculum is like; attendance at seminars and workshops helps them prepare for the medical school application and admissions process. - Undergraduates who are considering a medical career can take courses in anatomy, physiology and biochemistry at Georgetown University's Summer Medical Institute. College juniors with a minimum GPA of 3.0 are eligible to apply; it is recommended that students complete coursework in general chemistry, organic chemistry and biology before enrolling in the program. In addition to the science courses, participants can attend workshops on medical school admissions; students can elect to take science courses and workshops, or workshops without science courses. Summer housing and meal plans are available.

georgetown.edu - The Summer Medical and Dental Education Program (SMDEP) at Yale University provides academic training and career planning to college freshman and sophomores who plan to attend medical school. Science courses cover topics in chemistry, biology and genetics and are taught in seminars and discussion groups. Students can work on essays for medical school applications in the SMDEP writing course and career planning seminars help prepare participants for the medical school admissions process. Students accepted to the program receive a stipend and free housing on Yale's campus.

info.med.yale.edu - Undergraduates interested in applying to medical school can shadow a resident physician as part of Vanderbilt University's Summer Science Academy. Participants in the academy complete a research project and attend weekly seminars in addition to shadowing a doctor twice each week. Participants in the nine-week program reside on campus; college juniors and seniors with a minimum GPA of 3.5 are eligible to apply. Students can concurrently enroll in Vanderbilt's summer research programs; research areas include pharmacology, cellular biology and cancer biology.
