What is WorldPride?
WorldPride is an international Gay Pride event that brings together people from all over the world to celebrate our past, present and future. WorldPride is organized by InterPride, the international association of of LGBT Pride organizations.
The purpose of WorldPride is to raise awareness of LGBT cultural, social and legal issues and inequalities and to effect positive change through education, collaboration and outreach.
WorldPride Toronto
The Toronto Gay Pride festival is one of the biggest in the world, attracting 1.2 million people in 2012. WorldPride will coincide with Pride Toronto and will take place June 20-29, 2014. Events will include an arts and culture festival, a human rights conference, a street fair, a Trans March, a Dyke March and a Pride Parade.
Why is WorldPride being held in Toronto?
Toronto is one of the most diverse cities in the world and is home to Canada's largest LGBT community. Toronto is a major center for arts, culture and creativity. It's also a hub of human rights activism.
Toronto was chosen to host WorldPride after a bid at the annual InterPride conference in 2009. It beat out Stockholm, Sweden to become the first WorldPride event to be held in North America.
Where Else has WorldPride been held?
The first WorldPride was held in Rome in 2000, then in Jerusalem in 2006 and London in 2012.
