How to Get Excused From New York State Jury Duty
- 1). Write a note telling the State that you are unable to fulfill your summons, and indicate a more convenient time to serve within the next six months -- this may earn you postponement of your summons.
- 2). Explain why you cannot fulfill your summons and include documentation. If you are unable because of medical reasons, for example, include a note from your doctor explaining that you cannot serve on a jury.
- 3). Mail your letter back to the State using the return envelope that came with your official summons.
- 4). Call the Commissioner of Jurors office as soon as you can should you find that you are sick or otherwise unable to attend jury duty due to emergency.
