Autism Employment - One Critical Piece

1
When adults with Autism are working there is one critical piece of the job that will determine if the situation is successful or not, the boss.
There are several characteristics that are important for a person with autism to have in a boss.
Some of those characteristics people may already have or hopefully will be interested in learning.
When a person with Autism is working many times a job has been carved out of several people's job to 'create' a meaningful job.
This is an important piece of information for an employer to know.
If the immediate supervisor is the person who was originally there then this will be no problem.
The problem arises when the employer or immediate supervisor changes.
Many people with Autism work very well doing a job that has a huge amount of routine built into it.
This works very well when a job is carved out because that is the job tasks which many times annoy coworkers.
Unfortunately this becomes a problem if the supervisor wants the person with Autism to do something different or outside of the routine.
Patience is the characteristic required at this point.
Although it is possible to train people with Autism to do new tasks, they will not perform their job duties as easily if a new task is required everyday.
Another characteristic needed in an employer is a sense of humor.
People with Autism do not see the world in quite the same way as typical employees do.
Instructions that might usually be perfectly understandable may get a response that is totally different from a person with Autism.
