How to Dry Poison Oak
- 1). Place rubbing alcohol on the spot affected by the poison oak as soon as you realize that you've come into contact with it. The alcohol will pull the oil's poisons off of the skin and keep the rash from growing worse. Allow the alcohol to dry completely, then rinse the area with fresh water for several minutes.
- 2). Apply proper medication to the affected area. This can include specific products like Tecnu, skin moisturizers like aloe vera (which can be applied to help ease symptoms), or a lukewarm bath mixed with a cup of colloidal oatmeal.
- 3). Mix 1 cup of baking soda with 1.5 tsp. of water to create a thick paste. Gently spread it over the rash and allow it to sit for a few minutes. It will dry the oozing blisters and prevent the further spread of urushiol oil. In addition, you can mix 1 tbsp. of baking soda with a cup of water (essentially reversing the first formula), then soaking it in a rag. Apply the rag to the rash and wait for it to dry completely.
