The qualifications for judges for the Supreme Court of Oregon are set out in the Oregon State Code. Under the code, any attorney admitted to practice in Oregon and who resides in Oregon is permitted to be on the state Supreme Court. The chief justice is selected from the members of the Supreme Court. - Under Oregon law, a judge on the Supreme Court must be a U.S. citizen. Additionally a judge must have resided within the state for at least three years preceding the appointment to the court.
- Oregon Supreme Court judges are required to be admitted to practice law in the state. Admission to the bar can be by motion if the attorney is admitted in another state or through the passing of the state bar exam.
- The Supreme Court consists of seven judges. The chief justice is selected by the members of the court. The chief justice acts as the administrative head of the judicial department. A majority of the court may vote to remove the chief justice if he fails to perform his duties adequately. The chief justice’s term is for six years and he may be chosen for successive terms.
