How to Troubleshoot a Honda Snowblower
- 1). Change the gasoline if the engine won't start. If you are trying to start the engine for the first time of the season, the gasoline may be the problem. After sitting dormant all summer, any gasoline left in your snowblower's gas tank from the previous winter may have gone bad. Honda suggests draining the carburetor and sediment cup until the fuel tank is empty and filling the gas tank with fresh gasoline.
- 2). Change the oil. Just like a car, Honda snowblowers require regular oil changes to run smoothly. Check the oil just as you would on a car; the dip stick should indicate the oil level is full. Remove the plug, drain the old oil into an oil pan, close the plug, and fill with the recommended amount of fresh oil. Refer to the owner's manual to find what type of oil your Honda snowblower uses and how much it takes to fill it.
- 3). Replace the spark plug. If you've followed the previous steps and your Honda snowblower is still not running properly, you may need a new spark plug. Remove the spark plug using the spark plug wrench that came with your snowblower and replace with a new version of the exact model spark plug you are replacing. Refer to your owner's manual for more information about your Honda snowblower's spark plug.
- 4). Unclog the chute. If your snowblower is not throwing snow properly, it is likely due to ice or other debris built up or stuck in the snow throwing chute. Turn off the snowblower, remove the spark plug cap, and manually remove anything inside the snow throwing chute using the snow clearing bar that came with your snowblower or a wooden stick.
- 5). Contact a professional repair person. If you've completed these troubleshooting tasks and your Honda snowblower is still not functioning properly there may be a more complicated problem, in which case it's best to have a professional examine the snowblower and make any necessary repairs.
