The Road to Torrevieja When Holidaying in Spain
In your travels during your Costa Blanca Holidays make sure you pass Torrevieja (Old Tower), steeped in history full of charm and quaint bars, and with a surprising mix of people with a long history associated with the Salt Industry.
Chances are the salt on your table at home came from here.
If you're travelling around on your Costa Blanca Holidays and you do head to Torrevieja, you will see the ancient sea port steeped in history for those that like to walk and take in the sights.
There's the "embarcadero Romano", the old Roman docks, where you will see so many reminders of its very colourful past.
On the road to Torrevieja you should pass La Mata on the coast with the primitive watch tower representing the original tower built in the fourteenth century called "torre del Cabo Cervera", more commonly known as "Torre del Moro", that gave the city its name.
It used to warn the locals of any impending attack by Barbary Pirates and is a place that recreates its historical roots.
From here you can take some beautiful pictures of the sea and coastline of Torrevieja.
In the centre of the town is the information office where you would find "homage to the tourist", a piece of work that won one of the town of Torrevieja sculpture prizes.
While still on your Costa Blanca Holidays, look out for the Casino, a modernist building built in 1887 with an impressive mozarabic-style hall and is now used as a cultural centre.
With glazed ceramics and stylish details in the furniture, its Moorish style lounge El Casino also has an art collection forming an excellent picture gallery.
Other sites to see while on your Costa Blanca Holidays are the "Eras de la Sal" - the old salt deposit which was once an ancient Salt yard but now is an open air theatre where the annual "Habaneras" international music competition is held.
Where the town's sea and trading links with Cuba - the music bought here during the 19th century - it's soulful, rhythmic music all comes around during the August festivals when the town swings to the Latin American rhythms and the sound, colour and images of the times brings a new lease of life and exuberance to your Costa Blanca Holidays.
For those more interested in religious buildings and architecture or in general worship while on their Costa Blanca holidays, why not take a look at the towns Archiepiscopal Church, built at the turn of the 20th century.
Here the town locals worship the image of the patron saint of the Immaculate Conception.
In the municipal social and cultural centre at Los Angeles you'll find the Holy week Museum.
Plenty of Museums are found in Torrevieja and none more so than the Museum of Sal, charting Torrevieja's history of salt production and export going as far back as Roman times.
With just a few ideas to enhance your Costa Blanca Holidays I hope you have a pleasant time.
