Seoul, South Korea is a 'megacity'. The current population of the city is over 12 million people, making it one of the most populated cities in the world. A large portion of the southwestern part of the city is maintained as Yongsan Garrison, with Osan Air Base to the south. These two camps are quite close to the DMZ, or Korean Demilitarized Zone, that acts as a border between North and South Korea.
Approximately forty miles south of Osan lies Camp Humphreys, another major US Army Base. This installation houses the Eighth U.S. Army confinement facility, which is a center for those of the military sentenced to a year or less of detention. There are currently plans to expand the area of Camp Humphreys to 3,500 acres by 2012.
