Wanna Be in Pictures? Maybe You Should Be an Internet Marketer

1
Seth Godin famously said: "The rule the internet broke is that everyone who now has a receiver also has a transmitter." He said it to contextualize the shift away from big media -- singular messages coming down from the likes of the major TV networks or Madison Avenue. For entrepreneurs, this adage means that you have infinite ability to build your own profile using free or low-cost tools.

So if you'd like to be an internet mogul, here are essential next steps.

Find a niche

The most successful internet entrepreneurs serve very specific niches. Just look at Marie Forleo. This one-time dance instructor now plys her motivational know-how in an irreverent fashion to women who yearn to go into business for themselves. Marie makes fun and engaging videos that serve to attract that niche audience to enroll is her "B-school."

Lewis Howes was a successful pro football player who rebranded himself as a guru on LinkedIn Marketing and now he touts successful classes in a whole range of subjects.

When you're going after internet stardom, resist the urge to try to be all things to all people. It's much better to try and find a small but appreciative audience and build out from there.

Create a Brand

In order to create a brand, you need to think about your defining characteristics or "unique selling proposition." What do you do differently in a way that no one else can?

In creating an effective value proposition, Daniel Richards offers these tips:
  • Keep it short and uncluttered. Your value proposition explains why customers should buy from you. If you can't sum it up in 10 words or less, chances are you won't be able to execute it, either.

  • Be precise. Your customers have specific needs; your value proposition should offer targeted solutions
  • This is about your customer, not you. Your value proposition should discuss only what matters to your customers and the value you can bring to them.
  • Value comes in numerous forms. Money, time, convenience and superior service are a few of the ways you can help deliver value to your customers.

You can use an inexpensive platform to set up your first website -- here are tips on a bare-bones approach. Don't worry about it being perfect -- but do worry about it reflecting your unique selling proposition in a way that is clear and unambiguous.

Offer Value

Most online entrepreneurs spend lots of time blogging, answering questions, attending conferences and more. The reason why? They want to make sure their audience is engaged and ready to buy when they have a product to market.

Further, your blog establishes your expertise and therefore value to your audience. Start to write posts regularly in your business niche, and you'll be rewarded in the form of enhanced traffic and an enhanced profile within your own corner of the internet. More on content marketing here

So keep your audience "warm" by offering free value -- perhaps you do a weekly chat show on Google+, or put out a free ebook with lessons you have learned in your career. Even weekly blog posts or tweets can offer value to your audience.

Scale Up

"You are constantly thinking about who you are hiring tomorrow but really it makes more sense to think about who you are hiring in three months," explained gallerist, entrepreneur and writer Jen Beckman at the Women Entrepreneurs Festival.

Delegate tasks so you can focus on creating even better content. Think about spending more money on marketing. Find affiliate marketers who are willing to help you find more targeted traffic. All of these things can help scale your business from modest to major.
