Florida Medicaid Dental Benefits for Disabled Adults

4

    Overview - Who is Disabled?

    • Individuals who are totally and permanently disabled and at or below 88 percent of the poverty level are entitled to full benefits under the Medicaid for Aged and Disabled (MEDS-AD) program. People eligible for this program also must not be eligible for regular Medicaid and must meet the asset qualifications, as determined by the state of Florida. Those disabled individuals who have assets and income above the poverty level are considered medically needy and are allowed only limited access to services.

    Oral Examinations

    • Qualified disabled persons are entitled to a comprehensive oral examination. This examination must be conducted by a licensed, Medicaid-authorized physician. It includes a full cavity and tooth decay inspection. In addition, disabled people are also entitled to problem-specific oral examinations.

    Denture-Related Procedures

    • Disabled individuals who are eligible can receive denture-related procedures under Medicaid. These services would include repair of chipped or broken denture plates, replacing teeth, cleaning and refitting. Full dentures and removable partial dentures are also covered. Individuals who are medically needy must pay for a certain amount of these services out-of-pocket.

    Other Dental Procedures

    • Disabled people under the MEDS-AD coverage are also entitled to necessary radiographs performed in the proper execution of other dental services. Also, the incision and drainage of abscesses is covered.
