How to Do Traditional Native American Dances
- 1). Bend your knees and step long to your right. Drag your left foot to the right along the floor. Repeat the "step drag close" until you have reached the next position in the dance circle.
- 2). Lift and step with your right leg wide to the right. Repeat with your left, lifting instead of dragging. Continue this step-lift-close until you've reached the next dance circle position.
- 3). Stand on the ball of the right foot, and drag and shuffle it away from your left foot. Repeat the same pattern with your left foot. This fast-paced shuffle step is repeated in any direction until you reach the next dance circle position.
- 4). Jump onto your right foot, lifting the left knee, then repeat with the opposite feet. This "front trot" step requires a one-count hold in intervals. To do a "back trot," bend the knee rather than extending it in front of you.
- 5). Step forward onto your left toe, dropping the heel down in the same location. The same maneuver is accomplished with the right foot. The "toe flat" step is repeated throughout the specific dance, and is typically used between more intense dance steps.
- 6). Turn your right leg outward, touching your right toe to the floor while hopping on your left foot. Alternate the same move with the other foot hopping and touching. The "toe-heel" step is considered an advanced move used in many dances.
