Urinary tract infections (UTI's) commonly affect women. However, men can also develop these infections, in which they can experience lower abdominal pain, back pain, nausea, frequent urination and a burning sensation while urinating. If left untreated, a UTI can progress to a kidney infection. Thus, it's vital for men (and women) to seek immediate care and treat the infection. - Because UTI's can spread to other organs, doctors generally prescribe a course of antibiotics to quickly clear the infection and reduce symptoms. The recommended course is seven to 10 days, and for best results, it's imperative to follow your doctor's orders. Take the antibiotic for the advised number of days, regardless of whether your symptoms begin to clear.
- Frequent and burning urination aren't the only symptoms of a urinary tract infection in men. Backaches and pelvic pain are also common symptoms. Taking an over-the-counter pain medication along with antibiotics can quickly relieve back and pelvic inflammation. Soaking in a warm bath or placing a heating bad on your lower abdominal area or back may also soothe the pain.
- While it's difficult for most people to rest or take time off from work while fighting a urinary tract infection, rest is the key to rebuilding your strength and improving your immune system. A strong immune system allows you to fight off the infection and recover quickly.
- Drink often to quickly remove or expel bacteria from your urinary tract. Water and fruit juices, especially cranberry juice, are good choices because these beverages will not irritate the bladder. Instead, they'll stimulate kidney action and promote urination. Aim for three liters (roughly five pints) of liquid a day to help you fight off a urinary tract infection.
