Ice Cube - I Am the West Album Review

13
Before we leap down Ice Cube's throat and leave angry YouTube comments about how he has lost his Hood Pass, lets just take a look at how starring in a children's film effects your music.
Or more over does it effect Cube's latest and ninth effort, I am the West.
It does look a tad odd when you, over time, transition from a member of N.
W.
A to the star of a family friendly Disney esque road trip movie.
But what people forget is the immense profit that these ventures have generated for the artist, allowing him an immense amount of freedom to create a piece of work unfiltered but industry demands.
Having this kind of freedom and a clear disdain for the industry should allow for a classic Cube album, shouldn't it? Sonically, the album's first track Soul On Ice is everything that it should be in terms of a powerful opener.
The military snares and horns fit well together with Pharell type vocal wails.
There are no below average beats on the album but the odd thing is that for an album entitled I Am The West many of the beats have a southern flavour to them.
Regardless of the area they sound like, the music on disiplay is of a strong quality for its demographic.
Unfortunately, those hoping for an old school scathing Cube verse have wait a bit further into the album, as the rhymes on display aren't really befitting of one of the greatest to ever come out of the West.
I Burn Just Like Hot Coffee I'm Conned Up Sweet Like Toffee As mentioned, this form is later redeemed on tracks like No Country For Young Men and Hood Robbin where the listener is treated to around eight or so minutes of the fine vintage old school Cube that has written a multitude of classic albums.
When he's separated from mediocre guests and focuses on a suitable subject matter, we see his best work in a long time.
Also it should be mentioned that the beat in particular on No Country for Young Men is very reminiscent of one Andre Young.
Another stand out is the track Urbanian.
It has the honour of introducing us to the great insult for the ages "Google me bitch!" This track is the best example of a new age joint that still retains a level of quality and club catchiness, yet doesn't slip into the realm of ring tone hit.
If you are looking to put your speakers on blast whilst driving at a low speed then this album is perfect for you.
But if you are looking to see the brilliance that is Ice Cube kicking it ala Straight Outta Compton to The Predator, then you are best to just buy a select few tracks from I-Tunes and bask in what could have been one of the years top albums.
