Can You Splice a VGA Cable to the TV?

1

    VGA

    • Video Graphics Array sends five signals to a viewing screen: two signals for vertical and horizontal synchronization and three for discrete color information for the primary video colors red, blue and green. VGA uses a single cable with 15-pin connectors. The separation of signals results in the highest quality analog video available with more stable pictures without jitter of breakup, and the most vivid and lifelike colors without bleeding or ghosting. Other analog video formats combine signals electronically before sending them on cables.

    TV Analog Inputs

    • TV sets have various input formats, depending on model and price. Analog inputs include composite video, which combines all signals into a single connector. S-video sends color information in one signal, and synchronization and intensity information on another. Component video sends color information on three separate cables with the synchronization joined with the green signal. Higher-priced or high-definition TV sets may include all input formats along with VGA and digital formats as well. If the set has a VGA input, you can connect directly to it. Use the input selector function to choose which input appears on the screen.

    TV Digital Inputs

    • High-Definition Multimedia Interface sends digital video information along with up to eight channels of audio on a 19-pin connector. DVI carries digital video but no audio. You cannot make an analog connection to any digital format. Analog signals travel in waveforms that vary with color signal strength. Digital signals travel in pulses or codes that represent color signal strength. Digital circuits cannot read analog signals and analog circuits cannot read digital. To change VGA to another analog or digital format, you need an electronic converter.

    Conversion

    • VGA converters can change the five signals into analog or digital formats, depending on the model and its features. Some analog converters change VGA to composite video only, but more elaborate versions change it to S-video or component. Some change it to all three formats. Digital converters change VGA to HDMI or DVI. The HDMI converters have audio inputs to add sound signals to the connection. Converters only work in one direction. You can't use a VGA converter to change other formats to VGA.
